A Clinical Statistical Review on Epistaxis from 1962 to 1970



Abstract
A clinical statistical review was made on the 622 epistaxis cases treated at Ewha Womans University Hospital during the past 9 years, from 1962 to 1970. Cases were divided into three groups.
First group (1962 to 1964): Total number of O.P.D. cases were 4882 and nasal cases were 1437. Cases of epistaxis were 93, occupying 1.95% of the total O.P.D. cases and 6.61% of nasal cases. Third group (1968 to 1970: Total number of O.P.D. cases were 1893. Cases of epistaxis were 326, occupying 5.08% of the total O.P.D. cases and 17.22% of the nose cases.
Cases of epistaxis were incresed in third group and cases with unknown causes occupied great portion of the total cases with unknown causes occupied great portion of the total cases.
In first group, unknown causes were 20 (21.05%) among 95 cases of epistaxis. Unknown causes were sharply increased in last third group, 200 (61.35%) among 326 cases.
In first group, the most vulnerable age group was between 20 to 29 years old, occupied 32.63% of total cases of epistaxis. But in the last third group, children under 10 years of age and teens occupied all the same 29.14% of the total epistaxis. The cause of such difference in ages was not clear, but air pollution, inadequate humidity control in heating system and stress by noise in our living environment which had been greatly changed in the late decade.
